Who is the Holy Spirit? How can he help us in our spiritual journey?
Jesus, before ascending into heaven, bestowed on us an "advocate," also known as the Holy Spirit. On the day of Pentecost, the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit and "tongues of fire" appeared above them as they began to speak in different languages, guided by the Spirit (Acts 2:3-4).
The Holy Spirit was given to the Church to provide assistance, guidance and empowerment on our spiritual journeys. Just as Jesus walked with his disciples during his earthly ministry, the Holy Spirit walks with us now, providing help and consolation in our pursuit of God.
There are seven gifts of the Holy Spirit that assist us in becoming more obedient to the voice of God. They help Christians grow in holiness, fulfill their mission in the Church and build up the body of Christ. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are
- Wisdom
- Understanding
- Counsel
- Fortitude
- Knowledge
- Piety
- Fear of the Lord
