At 10 p.m. Sept. 30, a magnitude 6.9 quake hit the northern coast of the island of Cebu. At least 72 people were killed in the quake, with more than 550 reported injured.

Divine Word Missionaries on the island began relief efforts within days of the quake, delivering much-needed food, clean water and basic necessities. Our missionaries on the island are based in Cebu City, which is on the southern side of the island. Although earthquake tremors were felt in Cebu City, no buildings were damaged and all our missionaries and the people they care for are safe.

The earthquake’s epicenter was 12 miles northeast of coastal Bogo City. This city of 90,000 people has been devastated, along with towns and villages in the nearby countryside. Early relief efforts were hampered because roads and bridges damaged in the quake were impassable.

“Now that a clearer picture has emerged, the extent of the damage has far exceeded our expectations,” wrote Father Roger Bag-ao SVD, provincial superior of the Philippines - South Province. He reported that the disaster destroyed or damaged the homes of more than 128,000 families, or 456,000 individuals. At least 405 families have had to find shelter in evacuation centers.

Divine Word Missionaries in Cebu City have organized a task force to deliver assistance to those still reeling from the disaster.

Divine Word Missionaries plan to deliver emergency relief to 3,480 families—approximately 17,400 individuals—in six remote localities that have not yet been reached by emergency response teams.

To support these efforts, the Mission Center in Techny has launched an emergency fundraising project to raise $10,000, aiming to bring critical aid to earthquake victims. Your contribution will help those whose lives have been upended by this disaster, people in need of shelter, food, clean drinking water and basic everyday items.

We thank you in advance for your generosity and compassion. May God bless you for taking the people of the Philippines into your heart.

Support our missions as they minister to the most vulnerable!

O my God, I hope in You, because You are infinitely  merciful, faithful and almighty.
